Iphone 4 setup prior to jb/unlock

Hi,

I need some clarification on what type of setup I need to undergo with AT&T, before jb/unlocking the phone for Tmobile. My brother is with At&t and he will be buying the phone for his line, only to give it to me and keep his old phone for himself.

Can someone walk me through the steps I need to take to make the switch? Thanks.
