iPhone 4 shutoff, overheated?

I left my iPhone 4 in my glove compartment as I didn't want to take it into the gym. When I came back an hour later the phone was shutoff. I'm suspecting it over heated and turned itself off. I was able to turn it back on but not sure of the long term effects. Anybody experience the same thing?

No but I was running speedtest and the back got pretty dang warm, warmer then I felt any other iphone before.
