iphone 4 syncs with iTunes cause major system slowdown

I am having significant slowdown issues with my intel iMac when attaching my iPhone 4. Once the phone is connected everything on my mac slows down and starts beachballing until the sync is complete. I am syncing through one playlist but everything bogs down for a good ten minutes while the phone goes through its paces.

Very frustrating. Is this normal?
