iPhone 4 uses compass to have auto-rotation?

Now, today I am in google maps on my iPhone 4 and it uses the compass to have auto-rotation! My blue dot now has a vision cone and always orientates North. Everyone else have this or just me?

Clicking the arrow at the bottom left of screen enables compass mode.

ya know, i was always using a 3G, so i never had the compass. so that explains it.
