Hi guys

I know that all at+t phones are locked and unlocking them is a painful process.

But can you buy an unlocked iphone 4 at an apple store for a full retail price so that any sim card could be used.

I keep hearing conflicting stories about it.

Thanks a lot in advance for any info.

No. All iPhones sold in the USA are locked. If you go to Canada (or many countries in Europe like the UK for instance) you can buy unlocked phones in an Apple Store.

People at work think they know what they're talkiing about:D
But like said above all US iphones are locked to AT&T.
You can grab a factory unlocked one from Canada or other countries that sell them that way.

If it were that easy, there wouldn't be so much hassle dealing with preserving basebands, turbo sims, or unlocking tools.

But hey, bet him a beer that he's wrong. Go with him to the Apple Store, watch him fail miserably at buying a brand new, retail, unlocked iPhone in the US, then collect your bet.

And if by some miracle he succeeds, tell us which Apple Store, please! :D

Your co-worker isn't obviously that bright. Good thing you confirmed with us before doing something stupid.

Yeah, you could probably get an unlocked iPhone 4 16GB for round 800 bones on eBay but like another poster said, there's really no guarantee on it and there may or may not be a warranty. Factory unlocked iPhone 4s up here cost $659 for 16GB and $779 for a 32GB. You'll probably pay close to a grand for an unlocked 32GB in the states.
