Ok, So when I am at home, my IP4 is set to wifi instead of 3G. One question, does setting it on wifi 'waste' the battery? Is it better to turn on 3G? But does 3G data get downloaded even when I am not using the phone? Thanks!

It's the opposite, WiFi is better for battery use. Apple's official specs quote 6 hours battery life when browsing via 3G and 10 hours when browsing via WiFi so Apple's official opinion is that WiFi consumes less power and they should know. My personal experience bears this out as well.
