iPhone 4 won't update (1) or (3194) Errors

I am posting for a buddy who is a truck driver and is having problems getting his phone to update. He has the iPhone 4, has tried updating via itunes with no luck. He keeps getting the (1) error and the (3194) error.

He says he has tried the tiny umbrella trick with no luck, he has tried the hosts file change trick with no luck, I have exhausted my efforts as well.

Does anyone have any other advice that he could try? He has tried updating 6.1 and up.
