Will we see 4g on the iPhone in the next model?

3G chip will still be in the iPhone but if your in an area of 4g it would switch

Such like the iPhone with edge and 3G.

Is it time we will see this in the next iPhone?

I would love to see it and AT&T said they'd be rolling out LTE the middle of next year, which would fit the timeline. The only problem I see is that Apple's first iPhone was Edge only, while most other phone were already on 3G. I guess the conclusion is that no one knows.

Why 2012???

Next iPhone (let's call it iPhone 5) it's going to be summer 2011, by them the LTE networks on the state ( and around the word) will be on diapers, just a few mayor cities and most of the markets will be on "trial". However AT&T and T-mobile will have a strong HSPA+ network up and running, Make sense that next iPhone will support HSPA+ and since the AT&T contract will be over it make sense that it will go to T_mobile as well. (no to big red as many may want to think, since Verizon LTE network will support only data by them).

By 2012 All 3 carrier (and most other carriers around the world) will have Full LTE network up, falling back to HSPA+ where LTE is not available. Perfect timing for the first LTE iPhone to show up.

AT&T claims to be testing their 4g network in selected locations. Is this just marketing propaganda?

They probably are but for Apple to release a 4G iphone that will only get 4G on a few locations in the US doesnt sound like them.
They usually slow with adopting new tech for example the 3G chip in the iphone that came well after many years since other 3G phones have been out.
