I have "auto-brightness" turned to "on" but the screen brightness never seems to change. I've tried restarting the phone and sleep/wake from sleep several times - the screen never dims even in a completely dark room. I suspect this is a hardware issue but before taking in to the Genius bar I wanted to see if anyone else has noticed this?

i just posted a thread on this didnt get to much information but for me it seems to like to stay where i set the slider it might adjust very slightly but wont stray away to far from where i set the slider. Like it wont go fully bright or fully dim just changes a tiny tad.

Same problem here...stays the same whether it's dark or bright. Fwiw, I have the brightness sat to middle and auto bright on.

update

Same issue with my wife's iPhone 4. I had the 4 and 4s both side-by-side and they behaved the same way. After several minutes in one light condition or the other - no change. I'm beginning to think this is a software issue and Apple has taken a very conservative approach to adjusting the screen brightness.

I just tested mine and it works just fine. Dim in a dark room and when I turned it towards my macbook screen, it went to full brightness.

Do you have a case on the phone? I have read that some of the cases that were designed for the 4 caused issues with auto brightness on the 4s.
