iphone 4s camera flash supposed to go off twice?

Didnt notice before, the flash seems to go off twice, once before and then as the picture is being taken.
 
First flash is for focussing. The focus works by maximizing contrast within the selected rectangle, and therefore it needs more light than just the preview screen.
