I realised i had the hissing when plugging my iPhone 4s into my car stereo via the headphone socket so i purchased a proprietary connector that splits into line out for the aux and USB for the charge.

This did cure the hissing but now i have terrible distortion and crackling when playing music.

It seems to manifest when there is a lot going on in the music and not so present in quieter bits.

I'm inclined to rule out the cable because even at full volume with the headphone socket there is distortion present.

It seems like i'm stuck with either hissing using the headphone socket or near constant distortion using the line out method.

Does anyone know of a fix? It is almost as if line out has a volume setting of 12 out of 10.
