Last month, my new iPhone 4S (bought in December 2011) had problems with the volume button. Come to find out...it was a defect and they swapped it out.

Today, I was looking at the model number, and it showed as "MD244LL", in the "About" section. I looked it up..and that model number shows up as a factory unlocked iPhone 4S, 32GB, White.

Is this a one off thing that randomly occured? Does it mean the replacement iPhone is actually unlocked? Or is it an unlocked model that happens to be locked to a network?

(I am going to be getting a T-Mobile micro-sim shortly, so I can test it out.)

I purchased a factory unlocked 4S from the Apple Store and I asked the Genius when it was being replaced if it was still going to be unlocked and they said whatever lock status of the old phone will the transferred to the new one. I don't know, you should try a T-Mobile SIM, might have gotten lucky.
