iphone 4s not texting in landscape

My text mode doesnt turn landscape. I checked the little portrait lock thing and its not on.

Ive never had an iphone before so idk if this is normal

This is not normal. What iOS are you running? Also, you are use the native Messages app, not one downloaded from the App Store, yes? Try clicking the home button twice and close Messages from the multitasking bar and reopen it. Or restart the phone and try again.
