My iPhone 4s is stuck in recovery mode. When attempting to restore, the software extracts like normal then iTunes says preparing iphone for restore. The phone appears to begin boot up, then a very quick spin below the apple, then the battery indicator appears with no charge. Finally iTunes reports the iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (4013).

I have tried charging the battery with multiple different cables, from USB and from power adapter. The battery will not charge. The phone is 18 months old, so I bought a new battery and installed it. Same result.

Should a phone in recovery mode charge? I heard by design it won't charge.

This all started with an IOS 7 upgrade which led to non-functioning radios which led to the apple genius  attempting a complete restore. No body checked the battery level before restore. There's no way to tell if the newly purchased battery has any juice right out of the package.

Any ideas? :(
