i bought an iphone 4s on the at&t network for a friend. he is currently living in india, the phone was shipped to him and he is having difficulty unlocking it. i myself have never unlocked an iphone before. he is claiming he needs the original iphone purchaser information (first name last name, phone number it was purchased with and last four of the ss#) so i guess im here to find out if that information is needed to unlock an iphone, and if so why? if not, can you help explain to me how to go about unlocking it so he is able to use it since obviously the at&t network is useless to him while in india. any tips, tricks or general information is greatly appreciated. thank you very much for your time in reading and answering.

Did you bother researching at all.
Even with the buyers information he will not be able to use the iphone 4S in india.
All AT&T iphones are locked to AT&T. You cant just buy any phone and think it can be unlocked.
You're stuck with an expensive ipod touch now.
Have him send it back to you or sell it.
Apple will be selling factory unlocked iphone 4S sometime in November starting at $649. That is unlocked and will work with any sim, the one you send him will only work with AT&T.
nobody knows! best option would try to resell it then buy a factory unlocked in November like Applejuiced said!
