I recently took my iphone 4s to the genius bar as I have been getting strange bands of grey/black on the display. It's only really noticeable when the background is black, but it is annoying. When I brought it in, the genius took it in the back and then returned to tell me that it had water damage, thus requiring $199 for a replacement. As far as I know, it has never been in water, unless being in my pocket during rain counts. I later checked the sensors myself- the bottom sensor has been tripped but the headphone jack sensor is white.

Does anyone have any experience regarding this? will some people replace a phone for free if only one sensor has been tripped? Can you ask them to confirm water damage by checking the internal sensors or can they just declare it based on one sensor?

Any help would be appreciated- I probably will not replace it unless the display gets worse, but it's annoying since I actually did not get the phone wet.

Not sure about America but in the UK you can state that only 1 outside sensor has been tripped which can happen by accident. You could say that clearly none of the others have been so why can't you get it to be replaced.

I don't but I had read that as well. The only place it could have gotten any water is being in my pocket when it is raining- again, not something I would imagine would trip a sensor.

I probably will go back to another apple store to ask if they will reconsider as it only has one sensor tripped.

By chance, do you take it into the bathroom with you when you shower?

That's been known to set off some sensors in the past.
