Hi everyone,
I had a question I was hoping someone could help me with before I receive the new phone.
I ordered the 4S when it was available last Friday, but due to some incredibly bad customer service from AT&T I was unable to upgrade my old phone (even though it's a 3G that I got when it was brand new...). After numerous phone calls to both Apple and AT&T I figured out that I could get a phone for the contract price if I upgraded a different line on my AT&T account, but this means I'd be taking that person's phone number, and buying them a data plan they can't use. The Apple rep told me that all I had to do was put my current SIM card in the new iPhone, and that would let me keep my old number and unlimited data plan, and then I could cancel the new data plan that I don't need.
My question is, when do I switch SIM cards? Do I do that as soon as I get the phone, before I turn it on? Or do I turn it on and go through the setup process before switching? I imagine it doesn't make a huge difference, but I wanted to make sure I didn't screw things up one way or the other.
Also as a secondary question, does anyone know how hard it is to cancel a data plan? The Apple rep made it sound easy but he was pretty vague, and AT&T's website doesn't have much accessible information about it beyond "you have to have a data plan for a smartphone."
Thanks for any help!
