I can see the $1000 price as a starting price in a negotiation. If you start with a fair price, people will automatically make an offer that's half that price.

There are plenty of strategies to sell something at given price, but asking for such a rediculous markup on an item that is not---as far as I know---constrained in supply makes me feel this person is trying to screw someone who isn't quite paying attention. That's the only plausible explanation I can think of anyway.

The poster also explicitly stated the price was firm, suggesting that s/he has no interest in negotiation. Not that we should believe the latter; lies are common in negotiation and someone just mentioned the price dropped to $700.

I once started high to get a fair price, but it didn't work. I still got mail from the low-ballers who obviously based their offer on what was the fair price (minus 25-50 percent) and not the initial price.
