Iphone 5 adapter/ car

I have the Iphone 5- just bought the adapter b/c my car has a built in Ipod/Iphone Itunes player- so I need the adapter to play music through my car- but it charges my phone when I plug it in- is there a way to listen to music in my car but not having my phone charge every single time I'm in the car?? that is going to destroy my battery
