Is there any point in buying an Ipod speaker dock at the moment when there's talk of the Iphonr 5 having a smaller pin charger?

If you honestly need one now, go ahead but be prepared for the risk. But that is ONLY if you intend to buy a new iPhone when it comes out assuming it will come out with the smaller pin charger.

So it is sort of a gamble. Right now even though the rumour is HOT but we just can't confirm anything at this point.

Ok so what's the benefit of a smaller connector?

The micro sim for me has proven just the same as the first one. Just a pain that you can't put it in another phone.

So surely lots of incompatible cd players, docks, chargers are going to be out there?

There will be an adapter available for something like $29 which you can use with your old dock (30 to 19 pin). This really isn't an issue with respect to current docks.

You could always buy an Airplay or Bluetooth speaker. When the iPhone 5 comes out that should be compatible with the speaker you buy today.

Size. It might not be much, but Apple takes advantage of every bit of size reduction they can - lets them fit more stuff inside.

I'm considering a dock... an AirPlay dock...

Not worried about the connector size.

Not to piss you off OP, but was there ever any point in buying a piece of audio gear, which could last over ten years, that's compatible only with ONE frigging phone?

Go on ebay and buy an iphone dock with charge and line out ports for a buck 99. Connect it to a free input on any stereo.
