iPhone "5" backing?

I find it odd, what's your thoughts on it? Why has it got this aluminium bar "style" on the back?

The only things I can think of as a rough guess (and when I say rough, I mean really rough) is:

• Back panel gestures (like the Vita)
• Replaced with colouring on mass production
• Anntenna
• NFC
• Protection; not fully glass so it won't smash like the previous glass iterations
