iPhone 5 - cannot delete photos after import

I have been able to connect my phone and import my photos to iphoto. However, once that is complete and iphoto asks me if I want to keep or delete the photos, I choose delete, it says it is deleting the photos but after I disconnect the phone from the computer all the photos are still on the cameral roll. So I tried hooking the phone back up and opening Image Capture. After selecting all the photos, I hit the delete button. It says deleting on the screen for about 10 seconds then says "iphone was disconnected", and the photos are still on my phone. What am I missing here?
