Maybe i'm just unlucky but I haven't encountered one with great buttons yet.

Any y'all would recommend? I prefer a case that won't scratch but isn't too 'stretchable' like your standard tpu case.

Tones is my current favorite, but the buttons are terrible to press.
 
Take a look at the Belkin Grip Candy Sheer, it has a TPU back but a polycarbonate rim.

The most responsive buttons I've used so far have been the Speck Candyshell and the Cellairis bumper with metal buttons. The Speck Candyshell Grip is a very close second to those two.
 
CM4 Q5. Thickly, completely covered buttons yet they click like the bare ones on the phone themselves.

Can't speak for the Q4 (for iPhone 4/4S), only the 5.
