So i've tested this problem out on my iPhone running 6.0.1 on Sprint and the issue is easily replicated.
After making or receiving a call, when the phone ends the call and attempts to reconnect to CMDA 3G data via Sprint, it works through Safari, but iMessage and Mail both are non-functional. The only way to correct the issue is to toggle airplane mode, which seems to be a big hassle.
When you open Mail after ending the call, the lower status bar will stay on "Connecting . . ." and iMessage will hang and eventually say message failed to send. However, Safari will continue the browse the internet as usual.
Anyone else experiencing these issues? Really annoying stuff.
EDIT:
For the record, I have completed a DFU restore, completed the set-up as a new phone, and have repeatedly reset Network Settings all with the same result. My gmail account is set up through Exchange.
