iPhone 5 earjack problem?

I plug my earphones fully in the jack, the sound is distorted and weird. Plug it in about 3/4s in, the sound sounds right? Whats the issue here?

Have you tried another pair of earphones in the jack? It could just be the plug is damaged on the pair you are using or the jack itself could be damaged and needs to be replaced.

Plugging in 3/4 would give you mono through both earphones. When was the last time you blew the jack out with compressed air?? That would be the first thing I'd try
