iphone 5 from someone else??

if i upgrade to iphone5 under verizon contract for $200, will my iphone 4 still work with my sim? will the iphone5 be like any other factory unlocked phone if i take the sim out? i dont mind using the 4 and i was thinking about selling the 5 for $500. if i sell the 5, would it affect my monthly bill?
