An analyst is claiming that the iPhone 5 will have a twist with the NFC capabilities to set it apart from all the other NFC devices. Does anyone have an idea what this twist could be?

I was always assuming that the only capabilities of current NFC is to either 1) read information from an NFC tag on a product or 2) Purchase something

Is there anything else that the iPhone 5 NFC could be capable of?

ANALysts are know for saying lots of interesting things.

I think all of these bloggers and news outlets are just capitalizing on Apple's notoriety in order to get pages views by coming up with all of these rumors. Will some of them turn out to be true? Certainly, if only by random chance. I'll believe all of it when I see it, and I'm not getting all excited only to be let down when the reality is less exciting than the rumors!

It will be linked to your iTunes account and Apple will take a 30% cut as a merchant fee.

Oh, and you won't be able to use it to buy porn :D

personally, i dont see what the big deal is with NFC. i can see it being helpful, but needed? probably not. i recently had my credit card updated with an NFC chip, and i have yet to see a receiver where i can use it.

That's a pretty short-sighted comment. When iPhones, BlackBerries, and Droids are all using NFC there will be more demand for merchants to offer it as a payment option.

Contactless payments are much bigger outside of the US. As usual, we are still trying to catch up.

Locally the 7-11 convenience store (funny, it's a 24-7 store named after it's original hours) and Jack in the Box fast food spots have the "touch-n-go" type receivers for MasterCard and Visa NFC chips, at least.

This will probably be true. No joke.
