iPhone 5 in Japan on AU - Auto-connecting to edge in LTE available areas issue

As the title says, my AU IPhone 5 almost constantly chooses to connect to edge signals (little circle symbol still means edge here, right?) rather than connecting to LTE, even in places which they advertise as covered (Yamanote line stations, Nakano, Shibuya etc).
If it selected 3G that wouldn't be so bad, however edge can't even perform a google search.

Is this happening to anyone else?
