I tried restoring my iphone 5 from an iphone 4s back up.

after it finished restoring i got a pop up message saying "The settings for your iPhone have been restored. Please leave your iPhone connected. It will appear in the iTunes after it restarts"

the phone powered down to restart but it never came back on.

ive tried holding the power & home screen button but every time i do this the apple logo comes on for about 2-3 seconds and then powers off again.

What the heck is going on

Try a hard reset. Press the home button and the power button at the same time. Ignore the slide to power off. Let go of both buttons when you see the Apple logo. If that doesn't fix it, restore it and apply your backup.

EDIT: just saw your edit saying that a hard reset doesn't work. It sounds like you'll need to restore the phone.

Mine did that too, I was freaking out as it was my second iPhone. Managed to run another restore and it was fine.

I think I had to unplug and replug it a few times to get it to re-recognise in iTunes, try holding the home/power keys and putting it into DFU mode. I'm not sure exactly how I got it out of completely dead mode.

Hold both lock and home button for like 30 seconds. It should eventually happen something. Every time I have to do this on a phone I end up releasing one of the buttons because one tends to press softer and softer every second that passes by.

Just keep pressing. If nothing's happened in a minute and you're sure you didn't let go the buttons at any moment, then go for a genius app.
