Every talks about the display height being bigger. But I just checked the volumes. The iPhone 4s is 115.2*58.6*9.3 or 62782 cubic mm. The iPhone 5 is 123.8*58.6*7.6 or 55136 cubic mm, which is about 12% smaller. It's also lighter.

Then inside this tiny package there's the A6 performance, several times faster than a Cray-1 supercomputer, which required a 150 kiloWatt power substation and freon coolant.
 
Yes we all saw the keynote and can read apple.com. It's considerably thinner than the increased height. So smaller cubic mm makes sense.
