I'm kinda confused... my sources tell me that there is a firmware update for unlocked iPhone 5 so that we can get LTE speeds.

Another source is telling me that I have to buy the new phone...

So which is it?

Thanks guys

Unlocked AT&T models can get Tmobile LTE.

What you will not be able to receive with your current iPhone 5 is 4G HSPA+ on their native 1700mhz band. You will be limited to getting HSPA on their 1900 band that has far less coverage than the 1700mhz band.

U will get HSPA+ on 1900mhz on the old iPhone 5

yup but it will be very limited coverage, and crappy service indoors, I tested it in orlando it was horrible Edge 90% of the time
They are still in the process of reframing the network. Edge will eventually be phased out.

Edge won't be phased out anytime soon. A large portion of Tmobile rural coverage is still edge. The reframing is still continuing but for now the new iPhone 5 is the best way to go by far.
