They won't be sold out at Apple stores.
Apple is known to hold stock so they have some for the whole weekend.

If you go to an Apple Store bright and early, you have a relatively good chance of getting one. Any other store and you'll be absolutely screwed though.
I'm taking a chance and going to an Apple store tomorrow night! 
Actually I'm hoping I can buy it from the Apple Store app for in store pick up.
The 4s had a butt load of inventory around here with no shortage. I think Apple would have to be absolute fools not to have enough for release day unless its a supply and demand strategy. They know they'll sell during the holidays before the end of the year.
I'm just guessing but all those who pre-ordered and have to wait for 2-4 weeks, those iPhones aren't even made yet. Apple's just giving themselves a cushion to make more and save the pre-built ones for stores.

I'm thinking about waiting until next week to buy one from my local Apple store; I live in a smaller-ish city in the Midwest.

More then just an opinion.
Who knows though this launch could be much bigger, but that was said about the 4 after the 3gs launch and the 4s after the 4 launch. The hype just increases.
