OK, so my iPhone 5 sleep/wake button just started acting up on me last week. I would randomly take a few presses to activate. I thought it was my case, but it did the same thing with the case off.

Reading Macrumors, I discovered that it's a known issue and that pressing the button on the left side works better. My iPhone exhibited this same issue. So I thought I would wait until my iPhone got closer to the 2 year mark and use my Amex extended warranty to get a replacement phone, as most folks were just getting a replacement and not a repair.

OK, a few days later ... Apple decides to issue a repair program for this very problem. Yay! No hassles ... or so I think.

I read up on the repair program, and it's just that. A REPAIR (not replacement) program. OK, I can deal with that. It's the wait time that I am having an issue with. I can't be without a phone for 6 days, and I'm not sure if the "loaner" won't give me issues with the Topps BUNT app that I play. I'm not sure if an iTunes backup restore onto the loaner, and then back onto my repaired iPhone would work (in respects to not having the BUNT app get screwed up).

Anyways, I'd only rather do the restore once, rather than twice.

So here are my options.

1. Bite the bullet and get it repaired and use the Apple loaner in the meantime. OK, so my game might get hosed, but I probably spend too much time on it anyway. Pros - my phone gets fixed. Cons - it's not as good as a replacement as it won't be a new battery.

2. Somehow convince an Apple genius to replace my phone under an "out of warranty" replacement for $269 and have the Amex warranty cover it. Pros - I get a new (refurb) phone with a new battery. Cons - the genius might not be able to do this, plus I'm not convinced that this is totally ethical.

3. Wait for the iPhone 6 to come out and buy it on day one. Then get my iPhone 5 repaired. Pros - my iPhone 5 gets fixed. Cons - Apple's webpage on the repair program says that you have until 2 years after "first sale" to get this resolved. Here's where it gets dicey. I bought my iPhone 5 on launch weekend, but I didn't actually get it delivered until October 20-ish (I spent a month on AT&Ts backorder list). What does Apple consider the "date of first sale"? Will the iPhone 6 be available prior to that date? Will I be able to get an iPhone 6 right away?

I'm leaning towards 3, but the timing might be an issue.

Anyone have any comments or ideas?

thanks.
