My friend gave me his old iphone 5 and it turned out it was a bad esn and the home button stopped working. it still has the apple one year warranty if I take it to apple will they replace it?

I don't know, try to find out.

Either way, bad ESN = lost/stolen/didn't pay bill.

Seems sketchy to get a replacement device that will have a good ESN. I'm on to you..
 
I could see this turning into a really nifty fraud scheme if Apple replaces, free and clear, a bad ESN iPHone. AppleCare+ would help out big time (oops I dropped my phone in the pool and now it wont turn on) Something tells me it wont be so easy...

I'm not taking it Becuse of bad esn I told apple that on the phone I'm taking it so they could just fix the home button. They know its a bad esn and said they will only fix the button
