While it's obvious that nobody knows, can we assume that AT&T will give us the early upgrade that they did last year to keep us from switching to Verizon? Just curious of your opinions.

I don't think AT&T would do that two years in a row.

I'd love it if they did though, because I'm going to be eligible in September and I'd like to upgrade to the iPhone 5 before summer.

Sure they will. They have every year. I've had my iP4 for 6 months and they are already offering me a $200 discount on an upgrade. Just check your online account options. I'll get 200 off in June and 400 off in November.

Well, my words are special. Mark my words.
Here's what the only store says for me (I pre-ordered the iP4):

As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a reduced discount, along with a 2-year commitment. You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 06/19/2011

I kind of doubt it.

Last year when they offered it for the iPhone 4, AT&T showed a significant decrease in profit margin, and a lot of shareholders weren't happy.

I'm not saying they won't do it as a customer retention ploy on a case by case basis; but I don't see it being offered to anyone and everyone like it was last year

I'm sure if you are a good customer, (pay your bill on time/don't use a ton of data) you can convince ATT to give you a discount after only 1 year.

I don't think data usage would factor in to an early upgrade in the least.

So does the third bullet mean no more yearly upgrades? I'm not comprehending what they mean? Original Article.
