My first iPhone (or smart phone for that matter) is the iPhone 5 32GB and when I first synced it to my iTunes (updated to most recent version about 6 days ago) I put about 14 gigs of music on it. I plugged it into my laptop this morning to charge it and it started backing up the phone and it has been backing up for over 6 hours now. I've talked to a couple of friends and they have said it's not normal but didn't have any suggestions on what to do or why it's doing it.

Do y'all have any advice or is this normal?

I had trouble with mine backing up the other day, it kept getting stuck on "waiting for items to copy". It would get stuck on that step forever, never-ending loop. I ended up going back into my itunes library and finding all the missing files, deleting them, then copying my voice memos that I've had saved forever, putting them on an external HD, and reattempting to sync. No issues at all syncing it then.
