My friend bought for me an iPhone 5 from ebay. I live outside USA and we do not have AT&T service here. He didn't ask the seller if the phone is under or no contract because he thought iPhone 5 AT&T's are unlocked like verizon ones.

he had activation problems and couldn't get the phone activated with a t-mobile sim card.

I offered an unlocking service (which worked before) to unlock phone.

1. after it gets unlocked, do we still need an AT&T card to activate it?
2. if we can activate it with AT&T simcard, after first restore or updating iOS, will I need to activate it again and have trouble in my country?

It's not that I haven't looked for topics to answer mu questions. But they get me even more confused.

Will we solve our activation problems after it's unlocked?

edit: also the seller requested for an unlock from at&t.
