iPhone 5 volume not working right

I'm not really sure how to explain this. When I have the earpods plugged in and I try to change the volume it skips. Like if I'm going up it'll go from 10-13 randomly and going down it'll go from 3 - 1. But when I'm on youtube and I watch the slider go up its in the right place but when it displays it sometimes the boxes don't light up or it skips some. This only happens when the earpods are plugged in. Otherwise the volume itself is fine but this is bothering me. Also, it doesn't matter if I use the buttons on the earpods or the phone because it happens for both.
