it's official now: from next year on mobile phones in the european union must have a micro usb port to charge the battery.

so, will apple put an usb port to the iphone 5 or use an adapter?

found this on the german website appletaliban.com - http://bit.ly/i0eGUO

Would be nice, I just don't see them going away from their own branded adapters.

Apple was the one who got the adapter provision added to the regulation in the first place. They will definitely use an adapter.

The catch is that I believe they are required to include the adapter with the device to comply with the regulation.

Because it's a complete waste of limited resources for all phones to have different style of chargers/plugs in them.

QFT.

They pretty much decided that it should be possible to use generic charger A with random smartphone B, and settled on Micro-USB plugs being the plug of choice. I do have to say it's not a terrible decision in that:

1) You can use adapters if you must. Apple feels they must because they have a legacy support story that makes it annoying to ditch/replace the iPod dock port at this point. That 30-pin connector merges quite a few ports.

2) Micro-USB is at least a proper standard that most phones were on anyways (or mini-USB). They didn't invent some new one or task engineers to design a new one that would be completely different.

This is good news and it's about time. Apple needs to be forced out of the dark ages when phones had proprietary connectors. Welcome to 2011 iPhone :)
