Im really really really confused. I have been given a relations iPhone 5C to replace the broken screen. Repaired loads of iPhones over the years so no problem i thought.

I have opened the 5C and o_O

Why does this not resemble any screen replacement guide. Why doesn't the screen have a supporting frame? Am I being really thick? The phone was working perfectly before the screen broke.

The iPhone might have been working OK, but a few screws, etc, are missing.
Looks like the LCD shield was not attached to the front panel when the iPhone was last assembled!
That's your "supporting frame" (the LCD shield) laying in the bottom, not attached to the LCD.
And, apparently no support plate holding the home button in place.

My guess is your relative had the screen (or some other part) replaced once before, by someone who had no clue how to put it back together (probably didn't care about the leftover "bits" :D )

as said above, that piece should be attached to the underside of the lcd part you're holding in the picture
