trying to repair an iPhone 5c that had major damage to LCD and screen. Bought a replacement screen and digitizer, after replacing can see the image and can swipe but the left side of the screen is unusable. Starts off fine and then slowly lines start forming down the screen and it gradually gets worse. Could it be the replacement piece I bought was defective or did I do something wrong reassembling?

It could be a faulty replacement part. Most places that sell them have a warranty and will exchange it. If not try Gadget Menders. I have gotten parts and stuff from them and they have a warranty and a mail in service if you don't want to fix it yourself.

Looks like you've not seated the lcd cable correctly. If your sure it is get the screen swapped and see if the issue persists. If it does then your logic board is damaged.
