I recently bought a locked iPhone 5S from someone. I am not with the network that it is locked to. To activate it, do I need a SIM card from the network that it is currently locked to or just any SIM card? I tried cutting my micro SIM to a nano SIM from another network and inserted it but it says that there is no SIM.

You can't just put another carrier's sim card in and expect it to work.

You have to have the phone unlocked either by your carrier, or the locked carrier, to have it work with your carrier.

And that won't be an easy task unless you're willing to pay at least $100 to have a 3rd party do it for you, and it's not guarantee neither :)
