So i'm planning a trip to Japan, and because of some regulatory stuff the Verizon iPhone 5S won't work on their networks. I'm planning on renting a portable WiFi hotspot so I can have data while I roam around Japan. My question is, since the iPhone gets it's accurate GPS from the A-GPS chip, and my cellular radios will be shut off (ill only be using WiFi from the hotspot), will the iPhone still be able to get accurate GPS coordinates?

Yes, gps doesn't need data to get your location.
And since you will have data anyway you'd be fine.
Who told you that the verizon 5S wont work on Japans networks? Your 5S will work with any carriers GSM sim in the world.

Thanks on the GPS stuff, makes sense.

In terms of the phone not working in Japan, the A1533 version of the iPhone wasn't certified by the Japanese regulatory body that approves that kind of stuff (like our FCC) so while the phone technically supports 3 of the 4 the LTE bands and the GSM bands, it won't actually work on Japan.
