Someone correct me if I'm wrong - Apple/AT&T will not let customers buy new models off-contract for months after launch, right? If I remember correctly it wasn't until November or December that you could get an iPhone 5 off-contract.

The reason I ask is I'm not eligible for an upgrade because I upgraded to a GS4 back in May to give Android the ole college try but I've since come to my senses and am switching back to an iPhone. If I can get a 5S off-contract on day one I will (space gray, even though I'd MUCH rather it still be slate gray). If it's going to be months before I can get one off contract, I'd rather go ahead and get a new 32gb black iPhone 5 at the new reduced price.

Has anyone heard anything about that this time around?

Apple is currently taking preorders for unlocked/SIM-free full price 5c phones for delivery on 9/20.

It's possible they may not do this for the 5s, but by doing it for the 5c perhaps they'll also allow it for the 5s.

Good to know. I had thought the contract-free version they were selling was T-Mobile only, but I guess not. I guess there is hope for a 5S yet...
