Is it possible to disable fingerprint scanning from the iPHone 5S?

Or are fingerprints required by Apple?
 
That's a good question and I wish I knew. I assume it could be disabled but hopefully someone who really knows chimes in.

I suppose I wouldn't have any reason to disable it since I can secure the phone by doing nothing other than registering the print.

Absolutely. The fingerprint sensor and unlocking feature are totally optional.
 
Fingerprint sensor is optional. I wouldn't expect anything else in the good ole USA.
 
Yes, they're very likely options which you can switch on and off. Also, if you have fingerprint unlock on you have to put the passcode in if you don't unlock it for 2 hours anyway as a security feature.
