Like the title says. I got a 5s and my wife does not recieve the emoticon on her android. Also if she sends me one it just comes through as text and not as a face like it should. Thanks in advance.

I don't think emoticons cross platforms? I know that any emoji I send to my friend with a BB comes through her phone as a "J".

You could use an app such as "What'sapp" and then you would be able to send emoticons...

Emoticons aren't standard. Depending on how they are implemented, you'd need both phones to have the same emoticon set installed and using the same encoding to signal the presence of an emoticon.

Tell your wife to get an iPhone. Problem solved. :)

Install chompSMS app (and related emoticon app) from the Google Play Store and use that for sms/mms on the Android .. problem solved
