iPhone 6 and AppleCare

Can I buy the AppleCare protection plan for my iPhone 6 rather than getting the AppleCare + plan?

Do any of these plans have to be purchased directly from Apple or can I get them from a 3rd party seller? In the past with my iphone's 4 and 5 I bought them on ebay and was able to activate on my phones.
