I use an airport extreme and i have also created a 5GHz channel.... why my MBA and iPhone drop periodically the AC connection and connect to the 2.4GHz channel?

Try removing the 2.4 GHz network from your preferred network list.

Thats what i am doing but sometimes it comes back....

maybe because when i go to another room where 5GHz is not good on range it auto connects to 2.4..... i cant think of any other explanation.

if only i could create a 5Ghz network with different password from the 2.4ghz..... i havent found any option to do that on airport utility....?

Only the 5 GHz name can be changed. If you have a device with the 2.4 GHz network on and enrolled in iCloud Keychain it will continue to put the 2.4 GHz network back in the list.

You may want to consider that 5GHz barley penetrates walls.
It is very short range - very high speed.

The 2.4 GHz penetrates walls etc much better however is lower throughput.

After much experimenting I decided its best left to the devices to decide which network is the fastest at its location (too much hassle otherwise).
I have setup a roaming network with identical SSID and pw for 2.4+5GHz.

I also want to add that without measuring data transfer, 5GHz works blazing fast with iPhone 6.... not so fast with MBAir Haswell. I mean in daily use the difference it makes on i6 is quite noticeable.:apple:
