When I get my new iPhone 6 on Friday I want to use a fresh backup from my iPhone 5 to set it up the moment it arrives.

Question: Do I need to update my iPhone 5 to iOS 8 when it's released this week in order to have the backup right for the arrival of the iPhone 6? Or can I leave my iPhone 5 alone on iOS 7, make a backup, and use that to initialize my iPhone 6 which will be running iOS 8?

Should we really restore a n i5 backup to our new i6 or just set it up as a new phone and pick the right sync options?

Either way will work. Older backups can restore to newer iOS versions just fine.

Thanks.

I return from China on Monday and my iPhone will be waiting at the house. I don't want to update my 5 to ios8 in China and don't want a delay when I walk in the door.
