This phone worked perfectly and all of a sudden the screen won't come on. It's taking charge and when I plug it in the phone dings. In iTunes it doesn't say anything about the phone, but it does recognize it. The screen for the phone just says iPhone though. I have done a hard reset and tried two working screens to no avail. Any ideas on what this could be?

Your headline says the phone is not recognized in iTunes. The body of your message says it is recognized in iTunes. Which is it?

When you say, "The screen for the phone just says iPhone though," do you mean the screen of the iPhone, or do you mean the Summary page in iTunes?

You did a hard reset, and after that went directly to replacing the screen? Twice? What troubleshooting manual suggested that? You think the thing is a desk lamp, like changing the light bulb is the most likely thing you'd need to do? It's a computer! There's a long list of reasons the display can be dark that have nothing to do with the display being bad.

Start with these two articles:

https://support.apple.com/HT204095 - Not recognized in iTunes

Sorry. When I plug it into the computer iTunes shows it as a 16gb iPhone and displays the battery life. It acts like it is trying to sync, but never says it is. Then the summary page just says iPhone on the screen without any further information.

The iPhone stays completely black all the time. I tried a new screen because I had the phone open and a spare screen sitting right next to me.

Plug your phone in to your computer.
Hold down both the home and power buttons for 10 seconds.
Let go of the power button but keep holding the home button for another 15 seconds.

This will put your phone in DFU mode. From here you can restore your phone using iTunes.

okay now it is being recognized in iTunes, thanks! I restored the phone using iTunes, but the screen is still completely black.

Could be a loose cable considering you've changed the screen. Double check the connections of the screen cables to make sure everything is tight.

You're welcome! If the screen is still black, it is definitely a hardware issue. A DFU restore reinstalls both the firmware and software.

I suggest that you make sure the screen is installed correctly, as Matthew H mentioned above. If that doesn't help, take it into an Apple Store. Don't mention that you dismantled the phone, though.

Ok thanks. The apple brand screen is cracked, but the LCD works fine as I took it off another phone that I put a new screen on. Will they try to say that's the reason?

Is your phone under warranty? If it is, leave the phone as it is (with the new uncracked screen), and they will replace the entire unit without opening the phone up.

If it isn't under warranty, put the cracked Apple screen back on. Tell them your screen doesn't work, and you want an out of warranty screen replacement. Ask them what will happen if the replacement screen doesn't fix your issue. I doubt they will make you pay if the replacement screen doesn't work.

When you go to the Apple Store, don't 'lie' but don't mention anything about taking the iPhone apart either. Just say you don't know why it doesn't work. Which is true ;)
